Week 9

Food baskets were the project of the day. Thanks to all Friends Project participants who brought food to various activities over the last few weeks. We were able to make 14 food baskets plus have lots left over for Cornucopia Food Pantry. The project was a huge success. Wildcat Friends worked with students from Thomas Schools Community Leadership Program. Boxes were decorated, cards were made and various food was put into the boxes.

Week 8

Week 8 was filled with dancing, laughing and some acting. After a delicious dinner at Holloway Commons, everyone took a short bus ride to the Gables, which is student housing, where we had a good space for a dance class. Kerry, a UNH student who has been going to Friends Project programs for over a year, led us through some great dance moves. Everyone had a super fun time.

After dance class it was off to class. Class was a fun combination of learning about poetry and basketball. We had some poetry readings with a bit of acting to go with them. Then some poetry writing.

Next Wildcat Friends meeting is on November 18th when we will be working with the TSAS Community Leadership Program to put together food baskets with the food items we have been collecting.

Wildcat Friends Week 7

The rainy weather did not dampen the festive mood of Wildcat Friends participants. We started the day with a Halloween dinner at Holloway Commons. Many of the staff were dressed in costumes. Then a soggy, but quick walk over to Alexander Hall for a great Halloween party. Thanks to Beth and the students for putting on a great party. Everyone danced, ate donuts off a string and made Halloween cards. Before we knew it, it was time to go to class. Class was about making predications and outcomes. The students did some fun science projects including predicting density using eggs, creating tops to predict what size works best and altering the consistency of cabbage water.

Wildcat Friends Week 6

Week 6 of Wildcat Friends was fun and informational. After another great meal at Holloway Commons, the group went to Devine Hall for a yoga class. Ruth Abelman, Assistant Director of Residential Life, was our instructor. Everyone in the group really enjoyed themselves and concentrated on the yoga moves the entire class.

After class it was back to Hewitt Hall with our great teacher Lidieth. This week the group learned about NH History and important, interesting people by playing a fun game of Jeopardy. It was a great way to learn some fun facts about NH history.

Wildcat Friends Week 5

The weather continues to be great when Wildcat Friends does an outside activity. We had a great time meeting up with some mini dorm students and going for a beautiful walk in the college woods. The temperature was perfect and the trees were in full color. Everyone had a really nice time being outdoors and meeting new people.

After the walk, it was off to class. The class was around nutrition and the digestive system. Everyone was very interested and learned some new things. There was a lot of class discussion and hands on activities.

Next week Wildcat Friends will be having a yoga class for the recreation part of the program.

Wildcat Friends Week 4

Week Four started off with the bus riding group participating in "Wednesdays in the MUB." This Wednesday everyone got their picture taken. The picture was then put on a UNH banner. It was good entertainment and everyone got to take their banner home. Before we went to dinner, UNH students from Thompson Schools Community Service Learning class talked to us about collecting food and money in order to make food baskets on November 18th. Wildcat Friends goal is to get enough food and donations to make 14 baskets.

After dinner it was off to Johnson Theatre for a tour. Nancy Pearson from the Theatre Department did a great job with the tour. We saw the "house" where the main stage and seating are, then we went and saw where they make all the props. After that it was off to the costume area and the Green Room where the actors hang out before they go on stage. We got to meet some actors.

After the tour, we went back to Hewitt Hall for a little down time before the musical Curtains. Some folks played board games while others went for a walk. At 6:45 we headed back to Johnson Theatre. Everyone really enjoyed the show. It was very funny. The show ended a bit late (10:15) so all the parents were waiting and ready.

Wildcat Friends Week 3 - September 30

The weather held out for a fun afternoon playing sports with Gibbs Hall. After a "get to know you" game and a tour of the dorm and some dorm rooms (which are really small!) everyone enjoyed a variety of activities. Some folks played knockout and a basketball game, while others played volleyball. The volleyball game was a bit of a challenge with the beach balls and strong wind, so that group got creative and played charades. Can you guess what movie Chelsey and Deb and Kristin are acting out?

After a fun time with Gibbs Hall residence, everyone headed over to class. Class was very interesting with a slide show of Costa Rica. Lidieth, our teacher, is from Costa Rica. Her slides showed the different type of flora and geography that is in Costa Rica compared to NH. After the slide show, everyone learned about mammals and reptiles native to NH. It was a very interesting class with great discussion and questions.

Next week everyone is excited to see the musical Curtains. Before the musical, the group is having a tour of Johnson Theatre. Students will see what it takes to put a performance like Curtains together, including stage set up, lights and costumes.

Wildcat Friends Week 2 - September 23rd

Wildcat Friends had a great second week. Five students started the day at Alexander Hall. Nate, Kristin and Maura had fun playing Sorry until it was time to go to dinner at 3:00. After dinner, everyone went to Waysmeet Center/United Campus Ministry for a great drumming circle. Thanks to Larry and Chuck at Waysmeet for letting us use the drums and room and thanks to our great student facilitators. Everyone had a great time.

While Wildcat Friends were drumming, the power went out at UNH. No one knew what was going on or when the power would come back. At 5:30, after a short walk around campus, everyone went over to Hewitt Hall for a nutrition class taught by Lidieth. Lidieth was teaching by flashlight! At about 6:30, the room was pretty dark so we decided to go outside where it was noticeably brighter. We had a great time playing some get to know you games. We were all set to go inside and do a campfire circle around a flashlight when the power came back on. Lidieth set up again and taught until it was time to go at 8:00. It was a fun night, with a little electrical challenge thrown in.

Wildcat Friends First Day

.
Wildcat Friends Week 1 Slide Show

First day of Wildcat Friends was a success. Some folks came on the bus from Portsmouth, while others got dropped off. Dinner at the dining hall was delicious. After dinner, everyone went on a scavenger hunt. It was fun to walk around campus and see different places and buildings. The best part was going down town and picking out a UNH tee shirt.

After the scavenger hunt, it was off to Hewitt Hall for the first class. The class was an introduction to UNH and the students who go there.
